Introduction
Some women want to avoid pregnancy without the need to take a daily contraceptive pill, take an injection or use other contraceptive technics. An intrauterine device (IUD) may be an option for these women. Copper IUD is a perfect method of contraception for couples who want to space their pregnancies and for those who want a long term reversible contraceptive method. An IUD is also an option for a woman who has finished having her family, but does not want a permanent surgical procedure such as sterilization (“tying the tubes”) .Any woman who is not pregnant and even women who have never been pregnant can have an IUD fitted!!!
An IUD
is a small device placed inside the uterus. It makes the environment in the
uterus and fallopian tubes unsuitable for fertilization and
implantation of a fertilized egg It also decreases the motility of sperm
so they cannot reach the egg.
Insertion
Your
doctor will need ask for more details about any health problems you have had.
You will have a pelvic examination to determine the size and position of the
uterus.
It is
easy to insert an IUD during a menstrual period or soon afterwards because the
cervix is slightly open. Menstrual-like cramps may last for a few days and
occasionally weeks. Your doctor will prescribe a pain killer for this.
After the IUD is inserted
You can
go home and rest after the procedure. You will be advised not to have
intercourse for 48 hours.Never try to pull the IUD threads.
